Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, has served the community since 1956. Fr. Eugene Maguire invited three sisters from the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to open and staff the school. The sisters’ dedication to teaching the children in the tradition of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and the charism of charity, laid the spiritual and educational foundation for future generations of students.
Although there are no longer any sisters on the staff of the school, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School continues the tradition of the founding Sisters of Charity by providing a faith-based, quality education for all students guided by the commitment to knowledge, love and service. The tradition of serving students for many years continues with the guidance and leadership of the current principal, Donna Lauro, only the ninth principal at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic school in over 65 years.
The school campus is located in Scottsdale’s most established and historical neighborhood. It is situated among single-family homes, condominiums, luxury apartments, and retirement communities, and in close proximity to mixed-use businesses that cater to locals, tourists, and winter visitors. Property development in recent years has created a more densely populated area neighboring the school. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School is located within the Scottsdale Unified School District and is eligible to receive federal funds for educational opportunities for both faculty and students. In 2016, the school opened a transitional kindergarten and completed the requirements for licensing for a preschool. In 2020 the school, with the support of the Shea Homes Grant, renovated an area to include three classrooms and an enclosed space for new playground equipment for a preschool. The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Preschool opened at full enrollment capacity in the 2020-2021 school year.
The school crest, established in 2010, represents the spirit and mission of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School.
The crown is taken from the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and represents the patronage of Mary, the Mother of God, under the title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
The other elements of the school crest represent the three pillars of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School.
Knowledge: The open book represents Knowledge and the school’s mission to educate students through a strong academic program built on the foundation of Catholic values.
Love: The Celtic cross represents Love, God’s love for us and our love for God, while being a reminder of the Irish heritage of pastors Monsignor Eugene Maguire and Monsignor Thomas Hever.
Service: The three crescents represent Service, and are reflective of the Seton family crest and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill who served Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School from 1956-2012. The spirit and example of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton continue to inspire the school’s commitment to service.
